With summer on the way and with so much time spent indoors over the last year – time outside with friends or or an impromptu after work dinner on the beach sounds like bliss!
But if your outside dining kit is looking a little sad and the cool bag has cobwebs – think about dusting it off and supplementing with things that will make your picnic special.
Vintage pieces always seems suited for a picnic, their worn homeliness ready to help you serve up something delicious. You can pick up lovely pieces and it doesn’t matter if they match or even if they are in perfect condition – the wear just makes using them feel comfortable to use.
If you are dreaming of picnics, here are some ideas to get you started.
CHOOSE YOUR BASKET OR BAG
You might find a picnic basket in a charity shop without the contents – or one with its contents that you can adapt. Be sure to check that it has a secure fastening, especially if it is a hamper style basket.
Or you might find a big woven shopper like the ones you see in Spanish markets. A military style canvas rucksack would be cool and equally an old style open top grocery basket would fit the bill.
SET THE SCENE
Blankets and tablecloths are a must. Some blankets come with a moisture resistant backing, but this isn’t really necessary unless it is going to be damp where you are sitting.
If picnicking in the country, then a blanket is good for harder ground, but if going to the beach a thick cotton throw and cotton/linen tablecloths are great because the sand doesn’t stick!
Whatever your base, choose a fresh checked tablecloth to go on top ready to show off your spread.
NO NEED FOR PLASTIC
Vintage knives and forks look lovely on a picnic blanket and the knives are always the perfect shape for spreading butter.
The smaller sizes available make them ideal for carrying.
PROPER CUPS AND PLATES
I love having proper china in my picnic set. Perhaps not so good if you have to do much of a hike to your picnic spot, but there is nothing like eating on a pretty vintage plate.
Vintage crockery is usually smaller than modern mugs and plates so they are a great size for a picnic set.
And everyone likes a hot drink from a proper cup!
DON'T FORGET THE NAPKINS
Vintage linen napkins are perfect for wiping your fingertips and they can just go in with your regular wash when you get home. These are much more friendly to the environment than using lots of paper towels.
Whatever you choose, collecting your pieces is almost as fun as the picnic itself – enjoy!
